Shadow of A Doubt is the story of a girl named Charlie Newton (Teresa Wright), who is bored with her super simple small town life. His favorite doesn’t compare, but it stands alone pretty well and is his first American classic film chronologically in my opinion. For my money, Vertigo is his best work but that was critically derided in his lifetime and he expressed disdain for it I think in part because of that. This movie is reportedly the one he considers his favorite. If you turned to one of the classic movie channels and you saw 10 minutes of it and you knew any small thing about film I believe you could tell it was his work immediately. It oozes his name in every frame of the movie. Nevertheless, Shadow of a Doubt IS Hitchcock. I soon discovered it was well reviewed anyway but I doubt if you ask someone to name something by Hitchcock this would be the first, second or even third film that comes to mind. After all this isn’t one of his bigger known works and it hasn’t an Academy Award to its name. I approached Shadow of a Doubt on a completely blind rental since a few of the films I wished to check out were gone and I had little idea what to expect. Is there any name in film making more legendary than Alfred Hitchcock? To me, there simply is not. La Filminista Verdict: Amazingly effective thriller that is a staple Hitchcock film in such a way that even the most casual viewers of his work should be able to recognize some of his trademark stylistic touches and his master of creating suspense visually. Synopsis: A young woman suspects her uncle may be a serial killer. Starring: Joseph Cotten, Teresa Wright, Macdonald Carey, Henry Travers Genre: Mystery, Suspense, Drama, Classics
